LABORATORY TECHNIQUES IN BIOMATERIALS AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

Initial training on preparation of 2D and 3D substrates (hydrogels and porous biomaterials) for culturing cells and basic training on cell studies will be carried out at INEB, during the first 3 months of the programme. The essential topics to be covered in the period at INEB include four modules. A fifth module will be included in the training programme and will be organized by IBEC.

Module 3 - Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell (hMSC) Culture Techniques

Location: INEB, Porto

Date: 4 Feb – 22 Feb 2013

Fellows will attend tutorials to learn basic cell culture techniques. hMSC cells will be used to establish standard 2D cultures and also 3D cultures (hMSC entrapped in hydrogel-like matrices). Topics covered: aseptic technique; media preparation; sub-culturing; cryopreservation and thawing; assessment of cell viability (Trypan blue and Live/Dead assays), metabolic activity (MTT and Resazurin assays) and proliferation (Cell counting and Total DNA analysis).

Organizers:  Perpétua Pinto-do-Ó and Catarina Almeida
